Renewable EnergyIn order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, carbon neutrality by mid-21st century is essential. Today, ships are responsible for roughly 3% of global CO2 emissions, emitting approximately 1 billion tonnes of CO2 per year. Presently, there are no alternatives to using oil or gas to power cargo vessels across the oceans, however... A while ago, I took part in an MIT competition where I proposed that ocean wave energy could be used to ship cargo around the world. Unfortunately, the judges had no experience at sea, had a limited understanding of natural roll frequencies in relation to geometric height and probably had no prior knowledge about parametric rolling. Despite this, I still won 2nd place.
Here is the proposal. Wave energy is not new, but the breakthrough technology I put forward used a counter-intuitive trick to enable efficient synchronisation between the natural roll period of the wave-energy harvester and the wave frequency. This is essential if you want to work with the waves, instead of against them. It is only a matter of time before humans harness the huge energy resources stored in ocean waves, and I feel this breakthrough technology will not only benefit the shipping industry but generate the energy for the production of future liquid fuels such as methanol and ethanol. At the moment, no research is being carried out utilising this technology.
